SPRING MEETING
The Annual Spring meeting kicks off the 9-19 golfing season. The “Beaver” presides and conducts necessary business such as golf starting times, when the North and South golf courses will be played, assigning members to the various committees, receiving the Secretary’s and Treasurer’s report, dates of the Annual Ladies Night, BAG Day, and “D” Day events, membership openings, and dues.
LADIES NIGHT
For the 50th Anniversary we asked our ladies to join us in celebrating rather than having a separate Ladies Night. Honoring our ladies has been an annual tradition. The Ladies Night Committees worked long and hard to make each one a memorable occasion.
In the 1960’s, 1970’s and early 1980’s many were Black-Tie with dinner and dancing. Others had special themes such as the Roaring 20’s, French Night, A Wee Touch of Scotland, and Oktoberfest. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s Ladies Night became less formal and included a round of golf for the lady golfers and 9-19ers, followed by cocktails, dinner, and entertainment on the patio. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s Ladies Night reverted to semi-formal coat and tie affair with scrumptious dinners and light entertainment in the Clubroom.
PICNIC
The first Picnic was hosted by the Karrers in 1960 and continued annually with several hosts until the final Picnic in 1996 hosted by the Olson's. This was a very popular, fun event with challenging games and good food that included the ladies. Over the years many 9-19ers hosted the Picnic including, but not limited to, the Karrer's, Longenecker's, Brenan's, St. Clair's, Pat O'Donnell's, Uniacke's, Wenrich's, Simeral's and Olson's.
In 1997, due to difficulty finding a suitable place, the Picnic was replaced with an afternoon at Delaware Park that included a buffet lunch and betting on horses and/or slots if desired.
BEAVER'S COCKTAIL BUFFET
In 1996 the Executive Committee suggested that the Picnic be replaced by a Cocktail Buffet hosted by the Beaver. Beaver J.J. Gallagher hosted the first Cocktail Buffet in 1996, none in 1997, Beaver Bill Friz in 1998, Beaver Bob Darby in 1999, Beaver Doc Barineau in 2000, Beaver Gordon Lewis in 2001, Beaver John Stull in 2002, Beaver Jerry White in 2003 and Beaver Alan Peters in 2004.
BAG DAY
Bring A Guest was another regular event that had its inception in 1966. This was a time for 9-19ers to invite a guest to meet other 9-19ers, enjoy a fine lunch, and participate in an afternoon golf tournament. If you and your guest played well, you could have taken home a nice prize.
9-19 GOLF TOURNAMENT
This event was for 9-19ers only, was conceived in 1983. It was held on three consecutive Saturdays determined by the Golf Committee usually in July or August. The tournament had various formats including both match and stroke play. The format was individual 36 holes, stroke play, full handicap. The 36 holes were determined by playing only on Saturdays 1 and 2, only on Saturdays 1 and 3, or only on Saturdays 2 and 3. Playing all three Saturdays and selecting the best of three rounds was not permitted. The winner of this tournament was awarded the Lenoir Cup.
COUPLES GOLF
In 1977 Couples Golf was inaugurated with an afternoon of 9-holes of golf with prizes followed by drinks on the patio and dinner in the Grille (Dutch). Couples Golf then continued as a popular event for the ladies, and 9-19ers. There was an outing in early summer and sometimes a second outing in early fall.
GOLF AWAY FROM HOME
In the early years, “golf away from home” involved not only 9-19ers but also their spouses. Couples events included golfing weekends at Tides Inn, Seaview Country Club and Hershey Country Club. Unfortunately, couples weekend “golf away from home” lost favor in the middle 80’s and has not been resumed since. However, “golf away from home” for only 9-19ers, remained popular with 2 or 3 one-day outings per year at local country clubs, such as, Atlantic City, Lancaster, Saucon Valley, Kennett Square, Delaware National (Hercules) and Bidermann.
“D” DAY
This event was the golfing highlight of the 9-19 season involving only 9-19ers. It began with lunch, followed by an afternoon golf tournament and, on occasion, continued with cocktails and dinner. This event had many names over the years such as Closing Day, Calcutta Day in 1962, Stag Day in 1966, Doerger Day in 1969 in honor of founder and “Grand Beaver”, Chuck Doerger, and “D” Day in 1977, which identified it to honor the memory of Chuck Doerger.
